POPA 2 (SANDUBIDI)



This community has a population of more than 200 inhabitants, who essentially live in houses built of wood and roofs of palm leaves or zinc, over pilots.

In its totality is populated by ngobe families, whose origin is Bahia Azul, Shark Hole, Cricamola, San Lorenzo, Cayo Agua, Popa 1, Isla Tigre and Santa Catalina. The way to reach Popa 2 is only by boat from Bocas del Toro Town (30 minutes). Locals use also cayucos (wooden boats).

The ways in the community are not paved, with exception of a small concrete path that link the dock and the school of the community.

The main occupation of the villagers is the diving for lobster, the fishing and the agriculture.

At Popa 2 exist also a community tourism project (Meri Ngobe) that offers to the visitor one cabin for lodging, a restaurant, handicrafts and two trails, one in the forest and the other one in the mangroves.
