POPA 1



Popa 1 is the oldest community of the Popa island. Located in the southwest of the island, is inhabited by a little more than 300 ngobe indians, in 50 houses made in wood with palm leaves or zinc roofs.

In a region where the mangroves are the kings, the spectacular views from the hills and the calm of their waters, make this place an attraction for the tourists.

The villagers occupations are fishing, agriculture and cattle, all for subsistence. The local primary school, with 3 classrooms and 3 teachers, attends almost 100 students in the multigrade system.

Popa 1 don't have electricity, telephone or medical center. The water is supply thorugh an acqueduct that, coming from a creek in the hills, reach most of the homes.

In this community has his regional center the Mama Chi, ngobe indians religion.
