This community has a population of around 900 inhabitants, who live in houses built with a wide variety of materials: wood
and zinc roof, cement and zinc roof and very few of wood and ceiling of palm. It is populated in its majority by afrocaribbeans, which origin are several Caribbean islands, with an increasing number of foreigners who came to live here lately.
To get to the community, visitors must take an aquatic taxi (boats with outboard engine) in the main town of Bocas del Toro, 10 minutes of travel.
There are not streets in Bastimentos: there is a concret path that, in parallel with the sea, runs from one extreme of the village to the other. This way is very nice to walk observing the local life and the sea, just a few meters away.
Bastimentos has a health sub-center, an aqueduct, a primary school with almost 200 students, and a police sub-station. They are connected to the electricity and telephone services that come from the Colon island by means of an underwater wire. There are also public phones in the town.
People of Bastimentos have a mix of occupations: from fishermen to tourism businesses passing through subsistence agriculture, farm and cattle, and employment in Bocas del Toro (away 10 minutes by boat). During the last years the tourism had been increasing and many small hostels are spread through the town as well as restaurants y tour operators, including two dive operations.
Three lodge establishments exist in the town or very close:
Eclypse de Mar Resort,
Caribbean View Hotel,
Coral Paradise &
Hostal El Jaguar
