In the far northwesterly corner of Panama is an isolated cluster of
islands originally inhabited by the Guaymi Indians but now
intermingled with Afro-Caribbeans and Hispanics. The language is
also an interesting mix, known locally as Guari-Guari, combining
english, spanish and Indian dialects. The islands discovered by Columbus in 1502, evolved into supply and repair stations for the shipping industry. This explains island names like "Bastimentos" and "Carenero", meaning "supplies" and "careening" respectively. |

The largest and most important island, Isla Colón, host the city
of Bocas del Toro. Founded in 1826, it became the third most
important city of Panama, during the late 19th century ant the
early 20th century. United Fruit Company, the large banana
producer, now known as Chiquita Brands, was founded here as the
result of the competition for the exploitation of the banana
production. |

Five consulates, three newspapers, a bottling plant and the first
lottery in the country are indications of the prosperity enjoyed
by the inhabitants of the islands. Coconuts, turtle shells,
sarsaparrilla and cocoa beans were produced and exported along
with bananas.
Efforts are being made to preserve the enchantment of its wide streets and the wooden houses that line them, reminders of the English architectural influence on the islands. |
