THE CHANGUINOLA REGION


The relief is predominantly mountainous with a rainy tropical climate almost all the year and mighty but little navigable rivers, which it makes difficult the mobilization within the province. The Valley of Changuinola is the unique one in its geography and concentrates most of the population.

It has an urban area with one reduced territorial extension, limited to the city of Changuinola, with a 54% of the population located in rural zones and of difficult access.

       

Protected areas like the La Amistad (Friendship) International Park, shared with the Chiriqui province and Costa Rica, and the San San-Pond Sack Wetland Reserve, they give an idea of the ecological and tourist importance of this region, still to develop in this last field.

Mighty rivers like the Changuinola, the Teribe, the Sixaola and the San San, forming basins that extend by almost all the region.

         

The district of Changuinola has a territorial extension of 3.994,7 kmē where are 186 inhabited towns and villages.

The population, outside the city of Changuinola, is predominantly native: the naso-teribes are along of the rivers Teribe, Changuinola and San San, also inside of the La Amistad International Park. In the rest of the region, the ngobe presence is almost total.
