MAIN ECOSYSTEMS
The Bocas del Toro Archipelago biodiversity is more evident when we think about
the ecosystems present in the region.
Starting on the more important ecologica and economically, the marine
environments, there is one that appears as the number one, the mangrove, but followed very close by other not less important: the coral reef.
Between both of them, and usually ignored, is the ecosystem that, perhaps occupies the bigger underwater surface: the sea grass.
We can add that really the mangrove is related to both worlds the above water and the under water, belonging to the kingdom of the wetlands together with swamps, marshes and lagoons, usually of fresh water.
Finally we must mention the islands forests that are being threatened by tourism development. Still there are an important surface covered by primary and secondary forests, especially in the Bastimentos island, Colon island and Solarte key.
