BIRDWATCHING

Bocas del Toro is part of one of the 221 Endemic Bird Areas identified by BirdLife International throughout the world, under the category of Caribbean Lowlands, into the area A16 - South Central American Caribbean slope lowlands.

The endemic birds of this region are Purplish-backed Quail-Dove, Escudo Hummingbird, Lattice-tailed Trogon, Rufous-winged Woodpecker, Black-crowned Antpitta, Snowy Cotinga, Gray-headed Piprites, Black-throated Wren, Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Black-and-yellow Tanager and Nicaraguan Seed-Finch.

More information in the Panama Audubon Society web site.

In the Bocas del Toro archipelago the sea birds are more common and easy to identify and observe. But, in the rainforests of the islands the birdwatchers would find many surprises like the toucans in the islands close to mainland, like Cayo Agua and Cristobal. In the map above we offer location of the best places for birdwatch in the region of the islands.

It is also important the presence and nesting of the Tropic Bird (Phaeton aethereus), not endemic for Bocas del Toro but the Bird Islands is one of two only nesting places of this bird in the Americas (the other are the Galapagos Islands, in the Pacific of Ecuador).

Following we display a table with a list of some of the bird species that can be observed in the mentionned Bocas del Toro Archipelago.
